While you're blocking AI, your competitors are using it to move faster. The productivity gains from AI are real — companies that figure out how to enable safe AI usage will outperform those that simply prohibit it.

Shift from Restriction to Governance

Google's CISO team recommends organizations "shift to a strategy of guided evolution by making AI governance more agile and enabling, educating employees on responsible use, and establishing clear guardrails to encourage secure experimentation."

This means:

  • Sanctioning enterprise AI tools rather than forcing employees to use consumer versions
  • Implementing technical controls that protect data without blocking productivity
  • Creating clear policies that define acceptable use rather than blanket bans
  • Maintaining audit trails that satisfy regulators and enable incident response

Protect Data at the Point of Egress

Traditional DLP tools weren't built for AI. They rely on static, rule-based approaches that can't manage non-deterministic AI outputs or detect novel attack patterns.

Modern approaches focus on protecting data before it leaves your environment — inspecting prompts for sensitive information, redacting PII and secrets, and maintaining logs of what data flows to AI systems.

Make the Secure Path the Easy Path

Shadow AI exists because the unsanctioned path is easier than the official one. If your employees have to jump through hoops to use approved AI tools, they'll take shortcuts.

The goal is to make secure AI usage frictionless: same productivity benefits, same user experience, but with security controls working invisibly in the background.

What CISOs Should Do Now

If you're still relying on AI bans, it's time to change course. Here's a practical starting point:

1. Acknowledge the reality. Your employees are already using AI. Start from that assumption rather than pretending bans are effective.

2. Inventory shadow AI usage. Use network monitoring, CASB tools, or browser analytics to understand which AI tools your employees are actually using and what data they're sharing.

3. Implement an AI acceptable use policy. Define what's permitted, what's prohibited, and what controls are required. Make it practical, not aspirational.

4. Deploy technical controls. Look for solutions that protect sensitive data without blocking AI usage entirely. The goal is visibility and control, not prohibition.

5. Create audit capabilities. Regulators will ask how you're governing AI. Make sure you can answer with logs, policies, and documented controls.

The Bottom Line

Banning AI feels like the safe choice. It's not.
